Diese Norm deckt die Hardware digitaler Systeme in Systemen der Klassen 1 und 2 ab, wie sie aus den Sicherheitskategorien der von ihnen realisierten Funktionen nach DIN IEC 61513 (VDE 0491-2) abgeleitet werden. Dies umfasst auch verteilte Multiprozessorsysteme und Einzelprozessorsysteme, wobei die Beurteilung und Verwendung vorgefertigter Einheiten (z. B. am Markt erhältliche Produkte) und die Entwicklung neuer Hardware mit eingeschlossen sind. Wenn neue Auslegungstechniken entwickelt werden, sollte es möglich sein, ihre Eignung durch Adaption der in dieser Norm enthaltenen Auslegungsprinzipien zu beurteilen.
