Diese Norm gilt für die Komponenten von Audiofrequenz-Induktionsschleifananlagen zur Unterstützung von Hörsystemen. Sie kann auch auf derartige Anlagen für andere Zwecke angewandt werden, solange das angebracht ist. Sie zielt darauf ab, eine korrekte und einheitliche Darstellung der Herstellerangaben, welche mittels genormter Verfahren überprüft werden können, zu unterstützen. Diese Norm ist für Bauartprüfungen vorgesehen. Diese Norm ist zur Anwendung zusammen mit IEC 60118-4, welche das gesamte Betriebsverhalten beschreibt, bestimmt. Die betrachteten Komponenten sind: Verstärker; Mikrofone; andere Komponenten, wie z. B. Wiedergabeeinrichtungen.
