La présente Norme européenne définit les termes et spécifie les caractéristiques générales de construction des échelles. Elle s'applique aux échelles portables. En revanche, elle ne s'applique pas aux tabourets et escabeaux qui sont traités dans la norme EN 14183. Elle ne s'applique pas non plus aux échelles à usage professionnel spécifique telles que les échelles de pompiers, de couvreurs-ardoisiers et les échelles remarquables.
