Diese Norm beschreibt ein Verfahren für Mineralölprodukte und andere Flüssigkeiten zur Bestimmung des Flammpunktes im geschlossenen Tiegel, wenn deren Flammpunkt zwischen -30 grad C und 70 grad C liegt. Die Präzisionsangaben gelten jedoch nur für den Flammpunktbereich -5 grad C bis 66,5 grad C. Das Verfahren dient dazu, das Verhalten von Substanzen, Produkten und Gemischen gegenüber Temperatur und offenen Flammen unter kontrollierten Laborbedingungen zu bestimmen. Es sollte nicht dazu benutzt werden, die Brandlast oder das Brandrisiko jener Stoffe zu beschreiben oder abzuschätzen. Die Norm ist nicht anwendbar für Wasserlacke.
