Der vorliegende Teil der IEC 86 gilt für Primärzellen und Batterien mit elektrolytischen Systemen jeder Art. Das Ziel der Veröffentlichung ist: a) die elektrische und physische Austauschbarkeit der Produkte verschiedener Hersteller sicherzustellen; b) die Anzahl der Batterietypen zu begrenzen; c) ein Qualitätsniveau zu definieren und eine Richtlinie zu seiner Bewertung zu geben; d) eine Richtlinie zu Sicherheitsfragen zu geben. Diese Ziele werden erreicht durch die Festlegung der Benennung, der Masse, der Polarität, der Anschlusspole, der Kennzeichnung, der Prüfbedingungen und der Anforderungen an die nutzbare Betriebszeit jeder Batterie.
