La norma prescrive i metodi per la determinazione dei metalli in soluzione, mediante la spettrofotometria ad assorbimento atomico sia per approvazione diretta che mediante la tecnica del forno. Sono pure utilizzati altri metodi particolari quali il metodo dell'idruro gassoso per arsenico e selenio, la tecnica del freddo per il mercurio ed il procedimento di chelazione- estrazione per determinati metalli.
