La norma specifica un metodo idoneo per il controllo di produzione o per fini di sviluppo del prodotto, per la valutazione della velocità di rilascio del calore di prodotti essenzialmente piani esposti in orientamento orizzontale a livelli controllati di calore radiante per mezzo di un accenditore esterno. La velocità di rilascio del calore è determinata mediante l'utilizzo di una termopila invece delle tecniche più accurate del consumo di ossigeno. Nella prova è anche misurato il tempo di accensione (fiamma sostenuta). Può essere anche misurata facoltativamente la perdita di massa del provino.
