La norma, sperimentale, definisce un metodo per l'autenticazione sicura, mediante carta a microprocessore, dell'identità dell'utilizzatore di un sistema di informazione sanitaria. La norma definisce una procedura di autenticazione crittografica basata su carte a microprocessore aventi la prestazione di firma digitale. L'algoritmo di criptazione deve essere presente sia nella carta sia nel sistema di autenticazione, locale o remoto. La norma definisce anche le caratteristiche fisiche, elettriche e i protocolli.
