Specifies requirements for the design, installation, and commissioning of automatic fire detection systems. Definitions, general requirements applicable to all systems, and specific requirements for heat detection, smoke detection, and flame detection systems are given. Appendices set out recommendations on the selection of types of thermal detectors and on the application of smoke and flame detectors, together with a standard form of installer's statement for a fire alarm system, fire alarm symbols, and commissioning test report.
This standard sets out requirements for the system design, installation, and commissioning of automatic fire detection and alarm systems and components that are manufactured in accordance with AS 1603.
All installations of automatic fire detection and alarm systems shall comply with the general requirements of Section 2, with the additional requirements of Section 3, Section 4, or Section 5 according to the detector type, and with the commissioning and maintenance requirements of Section 6. Manual call points installed in conjunction with an automatic fire detection and alarm system or as a separate system shall comply with the general installation requirements of this standard. Where an automatic fire detection and alarm system is ancillary to an automatic fire-extinguishing installation, the detection system shall comply with the appropriate requirements of this standard.
NOTE: All pans of the building, unless protected by an automatic fire extinguishing system should be protected. This standard requires connection of the fire detection system to the fire authority, which may require the building to be fully protected.
