This Standard specifies methods of extending the standard 7-bit code remaining in a 7-bit environment or increasing to an 8-bit environment. These techniques are described in four interrelated Sections dealing with: (a) the extension of the 7-bit code remaining in a 7-bit environment (Section 2); (b) the structure of a family of 8-bit codes (Section 3); (c) the extension of an 8-bit code remaining in an 8-bit environment (Section 4); (d) the relationship between the 7-bit code and an 8-bit code (Section 5). A further section (6) discusses the specific meaning of escape sequences.
