Overview Safe transportation is a critical element of full community participation for persons with physical disabilities. Transportation vehicles must be designed to provide optimal safety and security for passengers with a range of physical disabilities. This fourth edition of CSA D409 is intended to provide guidance on design and safety of motor vehicles - excluding passenger cars, transit vehicles and intercity motor coaches - operated for, or on behalf of, any person, club, agency, or organization that provides a transportation service for persons with physical disabilities. First published in 1984, this latest edition has several critical updates and changes including the exclusion of school buses - as they are covered in CSA D250 School Buses- and the elimination of basic manufacturing requirements and modified weight ranges. In addition, CSA D409 makes reference to several motor vehicle safety regulations (MBSR) contained in federal regulations. Highlights of D409: Specifies design and manufacture of vehicle, lifts and ramps Outlines required safety equipment Specifies modified weight ranges for various vehicle sizes, harmonized with U.S. classification scheme Addition of provisions for vehicles powered with alternative fuel systems Clearly outlines modified design requirements for mobility aid securement and occupant restraint (MASOR) systems including positioning and anchor points of systems
