This standard works with methods of detecting microbial contamination in foodstuffs and isolates obtained from them using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It defines minimum requirements for the in vitro amplification of nucleic acid sequences (DNA or RNA sequences) and for detecting the specificity of the amplified nucleic acid sequence so as to ensure that repeatable and reproducible results are obtained in different laboratories.
