Der Zweck dieses Teils von IEC 61300 ist es, die Qualität der Endfläche eines polierten Lichtwellenleiter-Steckverbinders quantitativ zu bewerten. Die Information soll im Zusammenhang mit anderen Normen genutzt werden, die Forderungen für zulässige Oberflächendefekte wie Kratzer, Ausbrüche und Verunreinigungen festlegen, die das optische Betriebsverhalten beeinflussen können. Im allgemeinen beziehen sich die in diesem Dokument beschriebenen Methoden auf Fasern in einem Stift, Teile davon sind jedoch auch auf stiftlose Steckverbinder anwendbar. Die entsprechenden Teile werden angegeben.
