La présente Norme internationale définit un schéma qui décrit la représentation de l'information géographique sous une forme compréhensible par les êtres humains. Elle inclut la méthodologie permettant de décrire les symboles et de cartographier le schéma en fonction d'un schéma d'application. Elle n'inclut ni la normalisation des symboles cartographiques, ni la description géométrique et fonctionnelle de ceux-ci.
