This document, Volume 1 of the Telecommunications Transmission Engineering three-volume reference book is written for the practicing Transmission Engineer and for the student of Transmission Engineering in an undergraduate curriculum. Volume 1, Principles, covers the basic transmission principles that are involved in transmitting communication signals of exchange carrier facilities. It defines the characteristics of various types of signal impairments arising in practical channels, provides the basis for understanding the relationships between a communication network and its components, and provides an appreciation of how transmission objectives and achievable performance are interrelated.
