Il procedimento di ricerca della natura della materia colorante impiegata nella tintura serve a distinguere se la materia colorante usata è basica, acida, sostantiva, allo zolfo, a mordente, al tino, od azoica insolubile, mediante l'impiego di una delle sei reazioni indicate nella tavola. Il procedimento si applica alle fibre singole e non miste e vale per materiale tinto secondo le regole normali di tintura e lavato dopo tintura.
