This Standard specifies performance requirements and gives a method for a fire test applicable to cables rated at voltages not exceeding 0.6/1 kV.

This Standard specifies performance requirements and gives a method for a fire test applicable to cables rated at voltages not exceeding 0.6/1 kV. The cables covered by this Standard are intended to be used for wiring and interconnection where it is required to maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions. This Standard specifies only those requirements of cables related to characteristics necessary to enable circuit integrity to be maintained under fire conditions. The fire test is applicable to cables having two or more insulated conductors, whether or not the cables incorporate other metallic components such as armour, screen or circuit protective conductor. The test is also applicable to cables having one insulated conductor, provided that the cable incorporates at least one other metallic component. The test is applicable to single-core cables if two or more cables are twisted together with a lay length of between 10 and 15 times the diameter of each cable.NOTES:1 It is emphasized that the fire test does not assess a fire hazard, nor can the results of the fire test alone guarantee safety. It only provides information to assist the assessment of the suitability of a cable for a given application.2 It is assumed that the execution of this Standard's provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified staff and experienced people, for whose guidance it has been prepared.3 Compliance with this Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.4 Details of the AS/NZS 1660 series of Standards are given in Appendix A.
