Accuracy requirements and geometrical tests with reference to BS 3800. Relates to machines in general use and of normal precision. Does not apply to testing the running of the machine (vibrations, abnormal noises, stick-slip motion of components, etc.) or to machine characteristics such as feeds, speeds, etc.

This Part of this British Standard specifies, with reference to BS 3800, both geometrical and practical tests for drilling machines of the turret and single spindle co-ordinate types and gives corresponding permissible deviations which apply.

This standard is applicable to machines of general purpose use and normal accuracy.

It deals only with the verification of accuracy of the machine. It does not apply to the testing of the running of the machine (vibrations, abnormal noises, stick-slip motion of components etc.) nor to its characteristics (speeds, feeds etc.), which should generally be checked before testing accuracy.

There is a wide variety of machine configurations covered by turret and single spindle co-ordinate drilling machines, all of which carry out the same basic functions to the same degree of accuracy. Therefore the accuracy tests contained in this standard should be selected to suit the particular machine configuration (see also 4.3).

Examples of the main co-ordinate single spindle or turret drilling machine configurations to which this standard is applicable are as follows:

  1. knee type;
  2. single column, bed type;
  3. double column, bridge type.
