The determination of directly separable lipophilic substances is intended mainly to assist the designing and monitoring of separators for liquids of high volatility in a range of concentration by mass from 5 mg/l to 10 g/l. The separation behaviour of undissolved lipophilic substances is influenced by a number of factors including, for example, the nature of the sample (size, density and charge of the separating droplets, possibly adhering gas bubbles, surface tension and density of the aqueous and oily phase, adhesion of the droplets to suspended solids that are specifically lighter or heavier than the aqueous phase), and by external conditions (temperature, separation time, shape, material and surface properties of the separating vessel).
