Die Abschleppkupplungen dienen zum Abschleppen betriebsunfähiger Kraftfahrzeuge und in Ausnahmefällen für Rangierzwecke. Sie werden in der Regel am vorderen Fahrzeugende in der Mitte starr angebracht. Die Anbringung ist auch am hinteren Fahrzeugende möglich, jedoch nicht zur Verwendung für den Anhängerbetrieb. Es ist die Verwendung von Abschleppstangen mit Zugösen nach DIN 74 053, DIN 74 054 Teil 1 und Teil 2 und VG 74 059 und Abschleppseilen möglich. Die Abschleppkupplungen brauchen der bildlichen Darstellung nicht zu entsprechen; nur die angegebenen Masse sind einzuhalten. Der Steg ist fangmaulartig auszubilden.
