De norm beschrijft een methode voor: a) het merken van aansluitklemmen van roterende elektrische machines; b) het benoemen van de draairichting van roterende elektrische machines. Tevens wordt er een verband gelegd tussen a) en b). De norm is van toepassing op wisselstroommachines zonder commutator en gelijkstroommachines met commutator. De norm behandelt uitwendige aansluitklemmen. De norm kan ook worden toegepast voor inwendige aansluitklemmen.
