De norm beschrijft een directe kalibratiemethode om de hoofdfuncties van het toestel te controleren en en indirecte kalibratiemethode die geschikt is om het toestel in zijn geheel te kalibreren. De indirecte kalibratiemethode kan alleen worden gebruikt indien het om een periodieke routinekalibratie van het gebruikte toestel gaat. Indien een meettoestel ook voor andere methoden van hardheidsmeting wordt gebruikt, moet het onafhankelijk voor iedere methode worden gekalibreerd. De normatieve bijlage A geeft informatioe over diamannten druklichamen. Bijlage B geeft diagrammen voor de bepaling van de herhaalbaarheid van meettoestellen.
