Deze Euronorm geeft de volledige beschrijving voor de hardheidsmeting volgens Brinell voor staal. Het toepassingsgebied van de hardheidsmeting volgens Brinell is afhankelijk van het materiaal van de kogel, dat als indruklichaam wordt gebruikt. Voor een stalen kogel geldt de proef alleen bij waarden voor de hardheid volgens Brinell kleiner dan 450; voor een kogel van hardmetaal geldt de proef voor het gehele gebied van waarden voor de hardheid volgens Brinell kleiner dan 650. Voor beide kogels is er een hardheidsschaal. De twee schalen verschillen van elkaar bij hardheidswaarden groter dan 350 HB.
