La présente Norme internationale est applicable aux conventions de communication entre les équipements d'identification automatique et prescrit la reconnaissance des porteuses de données par des lecteurs de codes à barres et autres matériels d'identification automatique. Elle spécifie un court message, généré par le lecteur, qui peut être interprété par l'équipement de réception et qui indique la symbologie de code à barres ou l'origine des données transmises ainsi que certains traitements facultatifs associés au message de données.
