The application of renewal processes allows an analytical approach and enables the optimisation of computer-based numerical evaluations in addition to offering the following advantages:•the ability to model complex systems and mod-ules in their entirety•calculation methods that are clear and easy to understand •the ability to trace the influence of individual parameters •the ability to simplify the model and introduce approximationsRenewal processes are particularly suitable for •modelling systems operated with a prognostics and health management system,•modelling systems exhibiting reliability-adaptive properties,calculating the distribution function, the proba-bility density function, and the mean time to failure MTTFfor a standby redundancy with a critical switch,calculating the probability that a restorable component functions reliably at a specific time,•calculating the probability that a restorable component will not fail during a specified time interval,•planning the services of an item before mainte-nance is completed, and•forecasting the utilisation of a maintenance unit before a failure occurs.
