Die Grundlagen für die Speicherung von Messwerten auf Magnetband sind in DIN 66 208 Teil 1, DIN 66 214 und DIN 66 224 Teil 1 festgelegt. Die Aufzeichnung des Zeitcodes dient dazu, eine Zuordnung von gespeicherten Messwerten zur Zeit festzulegen. Die Zeitinformation enthält Angaben über Sekunden, Minuten, Stunden, Tage, Monate und die beiden letzten Ziffern der Jahreszahl. Ausserdern wird zur freien Verwendung eine vierstellige Kennziffer hinzugefügt. Die Norm enthält die für einen Datenträgeraustausch notwendigen Festlegungen für die Codierung des zusätzlichen Binärzeichens als Zeitcode.
